Changes going on now or being considered:
* Combine several DB sources of puzzles into one
* Create a cookie/cookieLess parameter system
* Contemplating & researching a fifth dimension Sudoku
* Evaluating a puzzle rotate feature
* Several [more or less] wacky concepts of ideas...
Save up to ten 'in-progress' puzzles along with their preferences. Because of my tendency toward feature-creep in web apps, it started to be both a real chore and somewhat limiting to keep track of all the preference options. So now the plan is to save things in the DB while switching between scripts.
When I started working on this app a while back, I didn't do enough of my memory refresh, and didn't remember that each of the 3x3 blocks must also contain onny one of the 1-9 digits as well. So now the game board needs to be reworked, but the looks can wait until I get the function worked out. As a band-aid for now, I'll give the blocks alternating colors/patterns.
Besides saving in-progress puzzles on the site, you may also want to store a copy of the puzzle every so often in case a wrong guess is made at some point and you need to backtrack. It can make things a lotm easier to recover.
Originally my plan was to set up seperate databases for rhe couple of sources I was planning to use for this exercise. My thinking at the time was since one source was a very simple one for a tiny audience and the other was a world class (SudokuoftheDay.com) website with an app for your phone or tablet if you wish.
Our app has two basic goals, the first to create a web app that serves as a tool to help solve Sudoku puzzles, ahd the second is to use the working script to use as the basis for a short course on making a quick and dirty php web application.
There are 4 choices for the interactive display mode, and 3 for the print-out mode. The interactive set range from showing every possible candidate for every unassigned box to not showing any hints, with showing a box's candidate list only when hovering over the box and the other in-between mode just shows how many candidates there are for a box, but not the actual numbers those candidates are.
The print out modes show either just the declared finalists with other boxes empty, the other boxes displaying the numbers 1 through 9 in a 3x3 grid ready to be crossed off when eliminated as a possibility of being a finalist, and finally with the other boxes showing the 1 - 9 grid with impossible candidates removed.
The first 3 interactive modes can also show the number of candidate numbers as well by the color codes assigned to the number, unless a mono-colored theme is choosen.
